The Well

Czech Republic , 2025, 6 h 16 min.
The case is known to whole generations of Czechoslovaks. However, few know what preceded the family tragedy that happened in 1968 in the Central Bohemian town of Vonoklasy, what followed afterward, and what the motives and intentions of all the actors involved were. The entire story of the Jelínek family spanning nearly five decades will be told in six episodes of the upcoming series Studna, a Voyo Original directed by one of the most respected contemporary directors, Tereza Kopáčová, based on the screenplay by two of the most outstanding talents of her generation, Miro Šifra and Kristina Májová.
It is the year 1932, and at a village dance, soldier Standa begins courting the young Marie. Which girl would not succumb to the charm of a witty, charismatic young man who desires nothing more than to make her happy at any cost? The loving couple builds their nest on the edge of the village, longing to start a happy family and live joyfully—until death. Their future seems to lie at their feet, and they are ready to fight all the blows of fate that may come. They believe they can get through it together.
“Even though the family story closed more than fifty years ago, dozens of articles and reports about it are still published annually, and new, often quite wild theories about 'what really happened' continue to arise. That was one of the reasons why we thought it might be the right time to return to the history of the Jelínek family and also highlight broader principles that can lead to tragedy,” says Voyo’s creative producer Michal Prokeš and continues: “The deeper we delved into the story, the more distant all the wild conspiracies seemed to us. We tried even harder to understand why people acted in the specific ways they did in those situations. For me personally, it is a story that started as a love story, which at certain moments faced fateful trials.”
Studna expands Voyo Original’s portfolio, which is inspired by true stories, personalities, or events. Director Tereza Kopáčová, who has been involved in several projects based on real events (Metanol, Ochránce, Smysl pro tumor, or Případ Roubal, the very first Voyo Original series), says about Studna: “We want to tell the story of a family led by Standa. At first, he had humor, charm, and ambitions to build and protect his family, to be a great husband and wonderful father. However, his ambitions were apparently greater than his ability to face the pitfalls and make the right decisions at the right time.” The project’s creative producer and Voyo’s development director Michal Reitler adds: “For me, Studna is primarily the story of a woman who wanted to fulfill all her life roles. A perfect material for Tereza Kopáčová. There is no greater Soukromá past than Studna.”
The main roles are played by David Švehlík as Standa Jelínek, Johana Matoušková as Marie Jelínková, and one of the most prominent talents of the new acting generation, Filip Červenka, as their son Ing. Stanislav Jelínek Jr.
