Only for Tereza

Romantic comedy as it should be.

Only for Tereza

Comedy / Romantic
Czech Republic, 2021, 100 min.

The romantic comedy Only for Tereza tells the story of a relationship between two people that is at its most critical point - on the verge of breaking up. What does a man in love do to save a crumbling relationship? Absolutely everything. Despite the fact that numerous pitfalls, mistakes and fatal misunderstandings await him. Love simply hurts.

Tomáš and Tereza experienced love like in a textbook. They met in high school, a spark jumped between them, and then it just smoldered and burned. After college, they stayed together in Prague, Tomáš, a meteorologist, got a great job as a TV weather presenter, and Tereza is trying (unsuccessfully so far) to start selling and producing handmade shoes. When did it stall? On Christmas Eve, when Tereza caught a half-dressed Tomas in a supposedly tricky situation with a popular TV presenter. Tommy could have explained the awkward moment quite rationally, if he'd been given the chance. His "reconciliation" is thwarted by an unscheduled stay at the police station, and when he finally gets home, he stumbles upon an empty apartment and a call to pack up and move out. Tomas doesn't want to give up without a fight, he'd like to soften Tereza up with a big romantic gesture, but he's already out of practice. Luckily, he has a friend, Karl, a film fanatic, who has a simple solution - why not be inspired by scenes from famous romantic films? But Tomáš soon discovers that what works 100% for movie heroines doesn't necessarily work in grey reality, especially when the execution is lame or when a charismatic photographer who is more interested in Teresa than he should be gets in the way.
Only Teresa is a romantic comedy full of awkwardness and missteps, illustrating that the fight for love can sometimes be an incredible slog, especially when life gives you one slap in the face after another.

Kateřina GARDNER

screenplay

Text and photo: Kateřina Gardner

"Only for Tereza" has everything a good romantic comedy should have - an original plot, popular and talented actors in the main roles and, as an unforeseen bonus, shots of a deserted Prague, because it was filmed during the time of covid restrictions. It's a story about great love, but also about how little it takes to lose your life partner. And not everyone has a friend, a film critic, who gets the idea of how to make things right."

Kateřina Gardner (1972) is currently working as a screenwriter for TV Nova, she is the chief writer of the series Ordinace v růžové zahradě 2. She has been working in film and television production for the last eight years and during that time she has been involved in a number of projects, including the series Drazí sousedé for Constantine Film and the English-language miniseries Dive In for Milk & Honey Pictures.
Kateřina found her way to screenwriting unconventionally through promoting the work of other filmmakers. She originally graduated from the University of Economics in Prague and then worked for fifteen years in the field of film, television and theatre as a marketing manager.

Pavel NOVÁK

screenplay

"Most of us grew up on fairy tales, so somehow subconsciously we long to slay the dragon, get the princess and live happily ever after with her. Most of the time it doesn't work out, because a happy ever after is a lot harder than a duel with a nine-headed sleigh, but the idea of someone succeeding is appealing."

Pavel Novák, a native of Hradec Králové, studied mass communication at Charles University in Prague. He entered the world of film first as an editor of the film magazine Totalfilm, then as a reporter for the television weekly Kinobox. Finally, he went into the cinema distribution environment, where he is still working today.
As the author of a number of plays he wrote for his tribal amateur theatre group from Obědovice, he had long flirted with the desire to write a film screenplay, until fate threw the screenwriter Kateřina Gardner into his path, with whose help he brought to life the screenplay for the romantic comedy Only for Tereza (2021).
