The Serpent Gift

Fantasy / Adventure / Family
Denmark , 2019, 103 min.
(co-production)

In a half-real, half-fantastical world of dragons, sea serpents and witches, we meet Dina and her family as they embark on their life's journey. The story also introduces the antagonistic figure of the powerful dragon king Drakan, who conquers the world and intimidates the inhabitants of the peninsula of Skay Sagis. "The story takes us on an adventurous journey into a medieval fantasy world. It is a half-real and half-fantastic mythological world with elements of Tolkien-esque dragons, sea serpents, witches, wizards, tyranny and murder..."

The cast

Rebecca Emilie Sattrup

Character: Dina

Dina's mother, Melussina, has a special ability - when she looks people in the eye, they can't lie. When a crime needs to be solved, she is called in.

Dina has inherited her mother's abilities, but she can't identify with it. She understands, however, that it is an important gift that she must treat with respect and great responsibility. Her brother Davin and sister Melli did not inherit this gift. When she meets her father Sezuan, she learns that she has inherited his gift as well. His ability is to create illusions and momentarily become invisible, or rather create the illusion that he is not there. Dina lived with her mother, who ran away from Sezuan when she was expecting Dina, because Sezuan's mother had her own plans for Dina.

Rebecca Emilie Sattrup (2001)

She was born in Copenhagen. She comes from a family of architects Naomi and Peter Andreas Sattrup. She rose to fame for her role as Dina in two literary adaptations, The Witch's Daughter (2015) and The Witch's Daughter: The Serpent Gift (2019). At the time of casting for the first part (The Witch's Daughter), she was only 12 years old and managed to win against 5,000 applicants. During filming, she attended the 7th grade Bernadotteskolen (a private school with an international focus) and had to undergo a special test to see if she could handle the rigors of filming. She is currently attending Aurehøj Gymnasium.

Director's statement on the movie

When producer Eva Juel Hammerich offered me the opportunity to direct The Serpent Gift, I wasn't surprised because my heart beats for the magical in a film story, especially with strong characterizations. It's clear that the amazing and incredible supernatural feel is something we know from the fantasy genre, but like any other film, the stories need to have something heartfelt to avoid merely trying to copy films like the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Game of Thrones series. The world of our film is unique and our own. My visual idea of The Serpent Gift is different from what you expect from a Danish film.
We were inspired by Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro, who use a large colour palette to create visually powerful films. I am also looking forward to working closely with my cinematographer Niels Reedtz Johansen to unify our view of the film.

The most inspiring thing for the continuation of this story is that I will be going in a completely different direction visually. "Yellow Autumn" is our backdrop. We're going to make a darker film and thus an even more exciting visual that matches Dina's new adventure. While I will change the visuals of the film, I will not change the already established and familiar characters - especially the protagonist Dina and her strong personality, which will remain intact. She is the heart of the story. The visual style will connect the audience with Dina's mind and heart, we will be visually and emotionally closer to her.
It is important to identify the personal point of view and the strong handwriting of Gunnar Järvstad. The combination with my sense of cinematic storytelling will ensure that. I am drawn to working on Dina's relationship with her father and making it a personal film about accepting who you are and where you come from. It's important that we experience Dina's inner journey clearly in this film, from child to young woman.

Dina's character is full of emotion and also intimacy, which I want to explore more. The key to this lies primarily in Dina's inner life, her feelings about the father she never knew and her fear of the unknown in the form of the snake that appears in Dina's dreams and eventually in the physical confrontation. The Serpent Gift is thus, in addition to being an adventure, also a coming-of-age story with conflict and tension between Dina and her father.
My goal is to create a film that is based on an already discovered world, but independent of the past, so that both new and regular fans can enjoy it. The Serpent Gift will be a dynamic, moving and visually transcending film. But it's also a film that gets even closer to the character of Dinah, and that's the most important thing to me.
My ambition is to lead the fantasy genre in a fun and innovative way, as well as being true to the wonderful world of Lene Kaaberbøl. Her books have been adapted into films).
